The Operatives are proud to put together some of their favourite Hip Hop artists in a show that is set to blow the roof off the Prince. This is an Espionage Hip Hop Special...

Featuring:

Jehst (UK)
Dizz 1 feat. Motley and Rucl
Remi
Amin Payne
Nam

Since putting out his own debut Premonitions in 1999 at only 19 years old, Jehst has fiercely established himself as the definition of an independent artist, going on to self release his first album FallingDown (2003), follow up Nuke Proof Suit (2005) and his production based album Underworld Epics Vol.1 (2006), and most recently the 16-track LP The Dragon Of An Ordinary Family.

Proving that great music stands the test of time Jehst’s words, rhymes and beats are as relevant today as ever before. Refusing to bandwagon, back down or conform, the evolution of Jehst’s music and career has been an inspiring and refreshing take on modern music, succeeding where many others have failed, he is a true Hip Hop visionary and torch bearer, living proof that following your heart and making the music you believe in pays off. Despite his UK credentials Jehst is far from a local hero, his name is respected the world over from the Australia to Europe and America to Japan, it’s time for this UK Rap legend to collect the props he duly deserves.

Hype Williams, the enigmatic Berlin-London duo consisting of Russian-born Inga Copeland and London's Dean Blunt, is not your typical band. They're not in the game to promote themselves, create a brand, or end up on MTV—in fact, they'd like to stay out of the game altogether (which may give some credence to the fact that a couple by the names of Denna Frances and Father Ronnie Krayola is often credited with "creating" the band as a sort of relay art project). Both Copeland and Blunt (who often goes by "D-Blunt") have dabbled in writing, photography, and the fine arts, but D-Blunt quickly shrugs off questions about that background. "Inga has a degree in something theoretical—I forget what—and I used to be a boxer, 'til I lost a fight with an Arab," he says, presumably attempting to mess with us.

Taking the name from a notorious hip-hop music video creator, Hype Williams create music engrained with early dubstep and grime, peppered with elements of pop and R&B. They avoid conforming to formulaic genres, focusing on fluidity and ‘free wandering’ in their sound.

Whether the medium is the internet, unlabelled CD-R mixtapes or elaborately masked live performers, Hype Williams captivatingly transcend the line between music and performance art… often playing with mountains of smoke, dazzling light shows, flexing body-builders and at seriously loud volume.

With releases across several labels including Hyperdub (Burial, Kode 9) & Hippos In Tanks (Grimes), Hype Williams are making an impression, albeit shrouded in smoke and mirrors.

The Operatives are back with yet another bit of Party madness!!!! Craze, one of our old time favourites is BACK!!!!!
One cannot deny this mans skills and he returns with partner in crime at the Slow Roast camp, Codes. A special addition wit Sampology's brand new AV spectacular, and local operatives, JPS and Nam and Sizzle.

● DJ CRAZE ●

5x World Champion / Kanye West & Yelawolf Tour DJ
Fool's Gold / Slow Roast Records label boss

On top of his untouchable turntablist skills and scratch champion showmanship, the world has also recognised that Craze is a second to none club DJ he has toured the globe over. It's the respect from both DJs and audiences alike that has paved Craze's seamless move between hip hop and turntablism to drum'n'bass both serious subzero clique/cult scenes the globe over demanding much of any artist trying to peddle their wares worldwide; to what now sounds like club-style Miami bass, formed with the technical love of hip hop with clean cuts and ridiculously dextrous scratching, but a mix up of straight up rap, ghettotech, raw booty house, old-school electro, Baltimore/Miami bass crossover and sweaty lo-end dancefloor music, making it all but impossible to keep still.

CODES

This BK, NY based beat maker is reachin' back to those golden days of hip-hop and house music. The days where you might sit in a record shop for hours searching for that diamond in the rough. His sound is a little cut n' paste, a little production wizardry, and a lot of love. Somewhere between here and there, then and now; thats really the best way to describe Codes take on dance music. This project pulls from his colorful background as the turntablist, producer, party starter, and of course music aficionado. His years of experience on both side of the decks makes him a natural fit on Slow Roast Records, and his production chops make him an exciting name to watch for 2011 and beyond!

Sampology

Sam Poggioli aka Sampology is no ordinary turntable technician. His legendary “Super
Visual” AVDJ series has earned him an undeniable reputation as Australia's leading Audio
Visual DJ, playing a number of the world's greatest music, film and arts festivals including

Niche Productions and The Operatives are proud to bring you Amon Tobin's ISAM live and direct in Melbourne.

On the 20th May 2011, the internet lit up as a teaser for Amon Tobin’s new live show ISAM Live debuted. The Brazilian born sonic master from Ninja Tune, who cut his teeth on early Drum n Bass records has gone on to be recognised as one of the most advanced sound engineers in contemporary electronic music, was preparing something extra special that had never been achieved before. With the teams of V Squared Labs, Alex Lazarus, Vita Motus, Leviathan and Ninja Tune, he has completely thrown the rulebook out the window as to what can be achieved with the standard projection format and on Tuesday 5th June, Melbourne can experience it first hand.

Check what fans had to say at the premier of ISAM Live at Mutek Festival in Montreal in June 2011.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWai4UZ0OqI

Taking a painstaking number of days to travel and erect for a rigorous crew, ISAM Live is destined to be a show not forgotten in the minds of music lovers and the likes of film-makers and artisans across the city. Truly an amazing feat, the ISAM Live tour is not due to come around our shores again anytime soon, so don’t miss out.

"ISAM live has raised the bar, and with the kind of attention it's gained, what remains to be seen now is how other artists will follow in its footsteps." – Resident Advisor 5/5

Hailing from two of electronic music's most exciting labels, Lapalux (UK/Brainfeeder) and oOoOO (USA/Triangle) bring their unique brand of beatcraft to Melbourne. Joining them will be Melbourne's Hiatus Kaiyote, currently championed by Gilles Peterson and defintely on the "to-watch" list of local bands.

LAPALUX [BRAINFEEDER/UK]

“I like to make music people can listen to several times and still find something new, buried in there somewhere. I enjoy complexities and getting immersed in sound so you forget who and where you are." MartynPepperell.com

Lapalux is 22 year old Stuart Howard, a very talented young man and the newest signee to Los Angeles based record label Brainfeeder (Daedelus, The Gaslamp Killer, Thundercat) Thurst into the spotlight by L.A star-picker Flying Lotus last year, Lapalux released his first widely available E.P, the beautifully woozy "When You're Gone" to critical acclaim.

Sensuous discordant melodies, Hyper colour synths, all topped with a drizzle of pop. Avant-garde tracks packed tight with sounds and samples leave the listener in a hazy, happy, sonic high.

oOoOO (TRIANGLE/USA)

"A spectral utterance from beyond the rave, this is like hearing your dance-pop past dragged up ... slowly" - The Guardian, UK

The overlap between pop and indie culture is one of the inspirations behind the music of oOoOO (pronounced 'Oh'), the moniker of San Fran producer Christopher Dexter Greenspan. Inserting Southern hip-hop, pop and rap influences into an electro-goth and witch house settings resulting in a spooky yet solid sound, and leaves oOoOO difficult to pigeonhole.

Signed to Tri Angle (How To Dress Well, Balam Acab, Clams Casino), oOoOO deviates from standard electronic conventions by taking shoegazey beats into eerily ethereal drag territory. Listening will make you feel like you are travelling backwards on a runaway chillwave ghost-train, and will haunt you long after the ride stops.

HIATUS KAIYOTE
"Soul music mixed with off kilted drums, sound effects, surreal vocals warm and fuzzy rhodes and a wonderful texture. The vocalist Nai Palm draws you in with her fusion of jazz vocals and harmonies. It’s very Little Dragon friendly with a tropical twists and dirty beats."
– Anthony Valadez KCRW FM- LA

"Oh yes!….hope they come to Europe soon, because the live show looks amazing"
Giles Peterson

"I can't get enough of these guys, Loving the experimental beats, lush strings, and low-slung Saturday afternoon soul on Hiatus Kaiyote's latest album 'Tawk Tomahawk'.
- Dan Digs KBCS FM - Seattle

"You don't hear stuff like this...ever. It's pretty incredible not to mention unique and mind-bending" Dave Ruby Howe - triple j

"Melbourne four-piece Hiatus Kaiyote will catapult you into a scene of a movie. They’ll provide the score and the visuals will follow. Their EP Tawk Tomahawk is a cinematic escape into a world of neo-soul, future soul, jazz, funk and wonky beats. There are hints of fellow Melbournite Kimbra about"- Razzamatazz

What Chris Clark does to contemporary electronic music is beyond 'genre-defying' - it is pure genre destruction. Having erupted into the electronic music scene in 2001 with album Clarence Park under the name Chris Clark, Clark is a rare breed of producer who resists the faddish nature of the music scene in lieu of creating original and extremely high-quality noise-driven beats.

Blending bespoke rhythms, colourful synth lines and masses of textured distortion, Clark describes his music as "looming, ambiguous, radiant...whole, invincible, complete". His ability to create music that appeals to your head, heart, soul and feet confirms his place as an electro-virtuoso - and one of the best producers on the planet.

Travis Stewart – better known as Machine Drum, or one half of bass duo Sepulcure – has been proclaimed as setting the standard “to which the next wave of imitators aspires” (Pitchfork). His catalog as Machine Drum over the past decade reveals a musical exploration between downtempo glitch hop to the sound he is now known for – a fusion of hip hop, juke, jungle and house.

All releases feature a blend of acoustic and electronic instrumentation – his 2011 release on Planet Mu, Room(s), combines hypnotic vocal samples with large shifts in tempo and style, creating a unique and dissociative sound. 2012’s SXLND confirms his place in the top ranks of new fusion dance music.

Having played alongside artists such as SBTRKT and Hudson Mohawke and remixing a handful of artists including Bonobo, Machine Drum has sent a fresh and innovative reverberation throughout the electronic music scene, which is sure to translate into an unmissable live show.

You might not know his real name just yet, but you've probably seen Jacques Greene. The Montreal producer doesn't usually show his face in photos or use his real name, yet in one short year he's had a huge impact on UK club music. Barely into his 20s, Greene's releases on boundary-pushing labels LuckyMe and Night Slugs have house music's euphoric melancholy at their heart, but incorporate elements of R&B and garage to make dancefloor excitement with a fresh, warm touch. It was his Another Girl 12-inch that really pricked ears and hearts, though, culminating in Radiohead asking him to contribute to their King Of Limbs remix album.

The strongest purveyors of crazy electronica come together to bring you the one and only Clark from Warp Records. OUt to release his new Album Iradelphic with a brand new live Audio visual show, this is something not to be missed!!!!!! Presented by The Operatives and Stable.

Watch this space

"He's the ideal type of musical perfectionist - one who realizes flawlessness is unattainable, but strives for it headlong all the same." - Pitchfork

"A dazzling mix of Nintendo soul, Warped acid and fragile neo-classical electronica… Joyful, twisted, forward-thinking… essential" NME

After a huge Easter Thursday show presented by life is noise last year, Clark brings his phenomenal talent back to our shores, to release his latest project!

Clark has announced the release of his new album Iradelphic, on Warp Records (Flying Lotus/Battles/Aphex Twin/Hudson Mohawke) on April 2, which includes collaborations with Martina Topley Bird and Bibio. He traveled to Australia, Berlin, Wales, Brussels, Cornwall, Norway and London, searching for a brand new palette of sounds and inspiration to twist in to his signature Clark compositions.

Describing the recording process, Chris said,"I don't think I've ever recorded in so many diverse locations; there was a lot of field recording going on in Snape, Sussex, harpsichords and orchestral drums. All recorded with a variety of tools. From £8k Cold War microphones, bling studio set ups, to laptop microphones, crumbling cassettes, dictaphones. It all got used."

Clark's live show promises to be a full audio and visual experience, with his brand new live show featuring live modular synth and an extraordinary visuals courtesy of Julian House/Ghostbox (Prodigy/Stereolab/Broadcast).

Jacques Greene

Machinedrum

Machinedrum’s absolutely mind-bending new album forthcoming on Planet Mu, one might think that the man born Travis Stewart is some fresh-faced space traveler repping the hot dance sound of a galaxy far, far away. The latter doesn’t seem so far off — there may not be a single producer on this planet who sounds quite like Machinedrum circa 2011 — but Stewart has in fact been on this planet for quite some time, amassing a genre-defying discography and honing his razor-sharp studio chops over the course of the last decade and change. His latest crop of productions are so hot, we reckon the dance music world will be spending much of the second half of this year sweating them out.

Mr. Dibiase

He's a serious dude, he does serious things...

Hailing from LA's very own Watt's, Dibiase a.k.a Diabolic's productions run the gambit from 8 bit video game classics to seductive soul to raw grungy bangers this guy has no limitations no sample is safe. This 12 time beat battle champion and runner up of the Los Angeles RED BULL BIG TUNE BATTLE.

Funkineven

West London soundboy Stevie J aka Funkineven has been making beats for the best part of 2 decades, infusing his grooves with the his own take on classic electro, acid, soul, hip-hop and whatever other genres his pleases, as he creates hybrid dancefloor music for the 21st century. Since the 2009 release of his anthem ‘Kleer’ with vocalist Fatima, the producer has been making waves with the Alexander Nut and Floating Points owned Eglo Records, becoming deeply entrenched in their new 21st century take on modern boogie music.
